SNOW in the hills!

Looked up the mountains yesterday where we snowmobile, in the West Kootenays of BC and above the 6,000 ft level there was snow! :E This morning the temp is only 6c, also the Sears Christmas wish book showed up yesterday on our Coffee Table. I'm thinking someone is trying to tell us that we could be in you an early fall ! :h Soup

RE: Any recommendations for Alaska Land and Sea Cruise??

It sounds like your going with a mixed crowd ( ages) do not go with Holland America, ( PLEASE). We ( wife and I) have been Cruising for about 15 years now and have found ( our opinion) that Princes Cruise lines is the best all round company to go with. Other will say different things however we have found and will never leave that Cruise line... again. Just our Opinion Soup.

RE: Seeking Alsaska destination info for trip

I just hope your not traveling with Holland America...........LOL Unless the shore tours are something that the Cruise Lines has set up for their customers don't take them. most pots there are lots of Taxi's around that are more then happy to have a customer for the day. I have been on a few cruises and we only book the tours that you wouldn't get if you just walked off the street. Yes they travel at night dock at day, unless you have a couple of days sail between ports which would mean you would be at sea during the day. do some research on the areas where you will be and you will find lots of interesting things to see and do, and not have to pay the Cruise Line to do them. We are planning our next Cruise as we speak, so enjoy the trip, and don't eat to much! Check out these sites http://www.cruisecritic.com/ http://www.cruisereviews.com/ Need anymore help just send me a note, Soup

RE: Tourism up or down?????

Wife talked with her buddy in Stewart last week and she said things are a lot slower there as well. We drove to Revelstoke and back yesterday and while waiting for the ferry and on the boats I looked around and ½ the vehicles were from BC most of the remaining were Alberta with only a scattering of Wash State. Oh and one guy from Sask, and his wife didn’t like the Mountains…. I said to my wife wait till she gets to Cape Horn….:E Soup

mister_d Forget about bringing your beer over the line, ours is much better. Bring your quota of Liquor you'll make up the difference on our high beer prices. :B BTC I thought I read a case of beer over there runs about $35. Over here I can get a case of Labatt for about $18 after bottle deposit. Is the beer $17 x 2 cases = $34 better? BTW, I'll be bringing the biggest bottle of Captain I'm allowed(: TAXES… If the price of Booze up here scares you wait until you buy some Fuel ………. It always gets me why people will ensure they can get by with the cheapest of anything including camping at Wally World while in Canada then in the next thread someone will complain about they roads are un- paved or in very poor shape, the best one was the toilet paper was empty in the Out House near Banff.....:h A good deal of the High Prices of Booze and Fuel is tax…Provincial and Federal Tax I also look to save as much money as possible in these days of inflated prices, however if everyone that is passing through to Alaska, or just making a short trip into Canada doesn’t purchase anything, who is left to pay for the improvements to our roads, campground, Federal and or Provincial as well as our Parks…. I guess guys like me that live up here year round. TAXES….Thats why you pay more, just like the rest of us north of 49.…….....................and our Booze up here is better… hicK-uP...:B Thanks I had to vent… now I will go pay my over due Property Taxes….. of $3000.00.............:S Soup Hey Soup, you're loony if you think we won't be dropping a load of loonies (ha I made a funny) while we're in your backyard. In fact, I plan on grocery shopping less than 10 minutes off the bridge. I know you were generalizing, understand your point, and can even relate a bit. There are quite a few Canadians driving over the river and through the Michigan woods without stopping to buy anything on their way to other parts of the US:W BTW, 2 cases of beer will definitely not be enough (yes damnit I'm the one sitting by the fire late at night drinking) so I plan on buying some of the "good stuff" too! Not Loonie...... Twonie.......... must be the expensive beer that got to me….one more point out where I come from 6 beers is a ½ sack, 12 is a case and 24 is a flat, so a case is only $24 bucks..;)

RE: Wintering in BC in a Motorhome

There is also Vancouver Island which is warmer and usually has less of a snow fall then the rest of BC. Having said that the Island, in some areas had a heavier then normal snowfall last winter. I know there is a year round campground in Oliver just up Hwy 97 a few Km. Soup

RE: How are the mosquitoes this year?

Yesterday I could hear one coming in for a landing. As this Mosquito didn’t have clearance to land it was brought down by local ground forces. Later you could see the wreckage all over the landing area. The aircraft was un-distinguishable, and was totally destroyed. I had to go and wash my arm off after.:W Soup

RE: Castlegar to Nakusp

The road is fine in about 1992 they rebuilt a lot of the section from Slocan City to Silverton. I have a 30ft 5'er and I travel that road lots. There are still a few skinny spots just south of Silverton as well as the hill at Slocan City and the Hill at Silverton should not be taken lightly. Lots of places to see and things do do up that Valley and the areas around it. Enjoy the road and your trip Soup

RE: scenic route Waterton Lake, AB to Calgary?

Try this Waterton Lakes National Park. from there get on Alberta Hwy 6 to Pincher creek, then go towards Calgary a bit and see Buffalo Jump http://www.head-smashed-in.com/ you will have to back track after that back to Pincher Creek and then follow Hwy 3 west to Frank Slide. While in Frank stop and see the Interruptive center where they will tell you all about the Frank Slide Alberta and the town that was hit by the land slide in 1903. http://www.cd.gov.ab.ca/enjoying_alberta/museums_historic_sites/site_listings/frank_slide/index.asp Continue west on Hwy 3 west towards Sparwood BC and see the largest truck in the world. Then on to Fernie and then on towards Cranbrook BC. There is a Hwy Jct. just east of Cranbrook that will take you onto Hwy 93 North. If you like you can head into Cranbrook and see the Railway Museum, it’s about 5 minutes drive. If not continue North on Hwy 93 towards Radium Hot Springs. About 10km from the Jct. there is Historic Fort Steel go for a tour. http://www.fortsteele.ca/ There is a nice private campground right across the Hwy from Fort Steel. Once you have reached Radium Hot Springthere is a Jct, take a right turn and continue on Hwy 93, to Banff which is about a 2 hour drive through Kootenay National park. Once you get on the Ice Field Parkway you’re about ½ between Banff and Lake Louise. Calgary is not far from Banff ( 1.5 hrs) http://www1.travelalberta.com/external/ext_MapsWindow.cfm On his entire route you are driving through and beside the Rocky Mountains. Enjoy what every way you go Soup

RE: Looking for B.C. Campground Suggestions

Kootenays are a Region not a Valley. :S The government of Canada disagrees with you. Kootenay Valley viewpoint Regardless of what you choose to call the area, the Kootenay Valley is a great region to visit. Well Bobofthenorth and paulj you were both right., there is a Kootenay Valley in Kootenay National Park, which is closer to next to Alberta, not Kootenay Lake. However after you told me about this Valley I did some digging on my own. I fellow down the hall from my office grew up in Radium Hot Springs, so I asked him if he ever herd of Kootenay Valley, and his answer was no. So I showed him the site that you had left a link to and he said Oh Vermillion. So see Us Locals don’t call it that so that’s why I hadn’t ever herd about it. Another point Bobofthenorth, you said in your first statement that you camped in the Kootenay lake area and you hadn’t been back to the Kootenay Valley in years., Kootenay Lake is not in the Kootenay Valley however the head waters of Kootenay River area. One last point, I don’t agree with a lot of what our Canadian Gov’t or Provincial Gov’t says or does Thanks for the clarification guys, I stand corrected. Soup

RE: Sorry Canada

Frank, LIGHTEN up, please. It's about how far afield you go. & yes, the value of the dollar is an important component. I, for one am glad to hear from those who will come to appreciate their northern neighbor. This thread has positive reinforcement for all of us up here. We know you economy is hurting and that makes your visits doubly nice. :C Ditto Soup
